GTA 6 Launch Trailer Tech Analysis: 1440p, No QSSR, and the RAGE Judder Fix

On this page
Current status
- Current status: Expert read of a marketing trailer. Rockstar hasn't published platform-by-platform tech specs.
- Last verified: October 19, 2026.
- Sources checked: Digital Foundry (feature and video), Push Square, GamesRadar, Rockstar's launch trailer page.
- What is confirmed: the trailer was captured on PS5, per Rockstar's page and the on-screen disclaimer.
- What is not confirmed yet: retail resolution per console, whether QSSR or PSSR is used, and whether the judder fix holds in normal play.
The long-running judder: fixed?
Reported (Digital Foundry). Earlier GTA 6 trailers showed "animation pacing errors". Camera moves and character animation could look jerky even when the frame rate was stable. DF says this has been a trait of RAGE-engine games since Grand Theft Auto 4, and it was one of two major issues it found in the Extended Look.
In the launch trailer, DF says that inconsistency "isn't present, including in slow pans and other shots where it would normally be visible." GamesRadar reported the same finding.
DF's own caveat: Rockstar could have chosen shots that hide the problem. "Fixed" stays unconfirmed until the retail game is tested.
Resolution and Sony's QSSR
| Question | Digital Foundry's read | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Internal resolution in the trailer | Looks like 1440p upscaled to 4K (with black bars) | Reported, expert estimate |
| QSSR (PS5 Pro-style AI upscaling on base PS5) in use? | "Probably" not, but unclear | Reported, leaning no |
| QSSR cost | About 4ms at 4K, based on DF's Marvel's Wolverine testing | Reported, DF test data |
| Frame budget | 33ms at 30fps | Analysis, arithmetic |
Leadbetter's point, via Push Square: spending more than 10% of a 33ms budget on upscaling would be "quite extravagant" when 1440p already scales well to 4K. Push Square adds that the trailer may use older footage and that the final game could differ. Base PS5 trailer complaints are covered in our visuals explainer.
Other things DF noticed
- Detail: water droplets catching light in the shower scene, and an "extremely detailed" iguana in the opening seconds (Reported, DF).
- HDR questions: DF flags HDR specialist Filippo Tarpini's view that Rockstar may use the AgX tone mapper and inverse tone mapping. That's covered in our HDR explainer.
- What DF wants next: an explanation of why the game is "best on PS5" and what each of the four consoles gets. See our PS5 features guide.
Confirmed vs rumored: launch trailer tech
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Launch trailer captured on PS5 | Confirmed (Rockstar) |
| About 1440p internal, upscaled to 4K | Reported (Digital Foundry estimate) |
| QSSR used in the trailer | Unlikely, per DF; not confirmed either way |
| RAGE camera and animation judder fixed | Reported as absent in trailer; retail unconfirmed |
| GTA 6 runs at 60fps on base PS5 | Not supported (see the 30fps guide) |
| Official per-console resolution table | Not published |
The bottom line
The most encouraging technical sign in the launch trailer is the apparent end of RAGE's familiar judder. Resolution looks like 1440p, and there's no clear QSSR. Treat all of it as an expert reading of curated footage until November 19. PS5 Pro questions are covered in our PS5 Pro guide.
