GTA 6 HDR Debate: Why an Expert Thinks It Uses SDR-to-HDR Conversion

On this page
Current status
- Current status: One expert's analysis of an SDR trailer. Rockstar hasn't said anything about HDR.
- Last verified: October 19, 2026.
- Sources checked: GamingBolt (quoting Tarpini's October 16 posts), Digital Foundry.
- What is confirmed: the launch trailer was released in SDR, and the blue-to-purple shift is visible in the pool scene, per Tarpini.
- What is not confirmed yet: which tone mapper GTA 6 uses, how HDR works in the retail game, and whether there are HDR calibration options.
What Tarpini said
Reported, quoted by GamingBolt:
- On the overall look: "Overall, what I see looks nice. Nothing appears particularly broken with one big exception. Gradients are smooth. Skin tones are great."
- On the problem: "bright blue turns purple!" In the pool scene, the brightest parts of the blue water shift toward purple.
- On the cause: he calls it "a typical trait of tonemapping per channel" and suspects AgX, which "has no gamut adaptation".
- On HDR: citing modder MusaRenoDX's analysis, he believes Rockstar uses inverse tone mapping without adding real highlight detail. "The biggest game in the world using a cheap SDR-to-HDR upgrade method would be a real shame... Hopefully I'll be positively surprised."
- The positive: explosions "are clearly tuned to look great in SDR too."
What the terms mean (plain English)
Analysis / explainer:
| Term | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Tone mapping | Squeezing a game's very wide brightness range onto your screen |
| Per-channel tone mapping | Handling red, green and blue separately. Very bright colours can drift in hue (blue to purple) |
| AgX | A popular newer tone mapper. Tarpini says it has no official HDR version |
| Inverse tone mapping | Stretching an SDR-style image into HDR. Cheaper, but highlights gain little real detail |
| Hable / ACES | Older tone mappers. Tarpini says GTA 5 and RDR2 used Hable |
None of this affects gameplay. It only matters if you play on an HDR TV and care about highlight detail.
What HDR players should expect
Analysis:
- The trailer is SDR. Nobody can judge GTA 6's real HDR from a YouTube SDR encode. Tarpini says so too.
- A hue shift on bright blues is the most specific thing to look for on day one: neon signs, pools, police lights.
- HDR settings: Rockstar hasn't listed HDR calibration options. Expect console-level HDR calibration to still apply.
- Performance: none of this changes the 30fps target.

Confirmed vs rumored: GTA 6 HDR
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Launch trailer is SDR | Confirmed, per Tarpini's analysis and DF |
| Bright blues shift to purple in the trailer | Reported (Tarpini's frame analysis) |
| GTA 6 uses AgX tone mapping | Analysis, expert suspicion, not confirmed |
| GTA 6 HDR is an SDR-to-HDR conversion | Analysis, an "informed guess" (DF) |
| GTA 6 has bad HDR | Unknown until retail |
| Rockstar has commented on HDR | No |
The bottom line
A respected HDR specialist sees signs of AgX tone mapping and an inverse-tone-mapped HDR path. That's credible enough to watch, but too early to call. Check bright blues and highlights on day one, then decide. More tech findings are in the Digital Foundry analysis and our graphics guide.

Frequently asked questions
- Does GTA 6 have HDR?
- HDR on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is expected, but Rockstar hasn't detailed it, and the launch trailer was released in SDR.
- Why does blue look purple in the GTA 6 trailer?
- HDR specialist Filippo Tarpini says it's a typical side effect of per-channel tone mapping and suspects Rockstar uses AgX.
- Is GTA 6's HDR fake?
- Not proven. Tarpini suspects an SDR-to-HDR conversion method, and Digital Foundry calls that an informed guess. The retail game will settle it.
- Should I avoid HDR when GTA 6 launches?
- There's no reason to decide yet. Try both modes on launch day and look closely at bright neon, pools and police lights.
