Current status

  • Current status: Weather system detailed in Game Informer's cover story. Gameplay effects unannounced.
  • Last verified: October 15, 2026.
  • Sources checked: Game Informer exclusive (September 29); VGC.
  • What is confirmed: dynamic clouds, localized storms, persistent wetness, tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes.
  • What is not confirmed yet: hurricane frequency, damage, evacuations or mission impact.

How the weather system works

Confirmed by Rockstar, via Game Informer:

  • Rolling cloudscapes: dynamic clouds move across Leonida, giving everything from clear skies to overcast days.
  • Localized storms: you can be in a dry, sunny area and see it pouring in the distance.
  • Persistence: drive to where it rained and you'll find puddles and wet surfaces.
  • Rainbows: they can appear after a shower in the right light.

Rockstar quote (via VGC): Owen Shepherd, VP of art for lighting and rendering: "We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent, and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven't felt before." He describes a range from "the clear blue skies of a Miami winter" to towering cumulonimbus clouds with lightning.

Hurricanes and tropical storms

Confirmed: Game Informer says Leonida, like Florida, gets "tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes." VGC's summary adds that in severe storms, water pours from rooftops and lampposts while thunder and lightning light up the clouds.

Unknown: both outlets say Rockstar hasn't revealed how often big storms happen or how they affect gameplay or story. Any claim that hurricanes cause mandatory evacuations or destroy buildings is Rumor until Rockstar shows it.

Why it matters

Analysis. GTA 5 had weather, but it was mostly a global state: it rained everywhere at once. Localized, persistent weather fits the game's Florida identity. It could also change driving, visibility and police chases, which already matter more under the new wanted system. It's also a big rendering load, part of the reason the game is 30fps on consoles.

The bottom line

Florida weather, including hurricanes, is in. What it does to your day in Leonida isn't known yet. More from the same cover story: the six regions.
