Current status

  • Current status: "Twice GTA 5" is now a Rockstar developer statement, though still not a square-mile figure.
  • Last verified: October 15, 2026.
  • Sources checked: Game Informer cover reveal (issue 382, digital edition September 29); VGC's summary.
  • What is confirmed: the 2x comparison and the six region names and themes.
  • What is not confirmed yet: exact area, and how much of it is water.

What Rockstar said

Reported, on record (via VGC, quoting Game Informer): Aaron Garbut, Rockstar's head of development and co-studio head, called Leonida the biggest map Rockstar has made "by some degree," twice as large as GTA 5 and with more detail.

"We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors," Garbut said. "This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit."

Analysis: Garbut's point is about interior density as much as raw size. GTA 5 had many inaccessible buildings. Compare: GTA 6 map vs GTA 5.

The six regions

Reported (Rockstar descriptions via VGC; real-world inspirations as described there):

RegionWhat it isReal-world inspiration
Vice CityThe urban center: Art Deco, beaches, a major cruise portMiami
Leonida KeysIsland chainThe Florida Keys
GrassriversVast wetland full of wildlifeThe Everglades
Port GellhornFaded tourist town with cheap motels and rundown mallsFlorida's declining resort towns
Ambrosia"The heart of Leonida," industrial: factories and refineries, with a powerful biker gangFlorida's industrial interior
Mount Kalaga National ParkNorthern wilderness and wildlifeThe Florida–Georgia border culture

What we still don't know

  • No official area figure. "Twice" is a comparison, not a measurement.
  • No full official map. Rockstar has shown regions, not a complete map. The only paper map announced is the poster in the $399.99 Vice City Collection.
  • Fan maps are still estimates. See the GTA 6 mapping project.
