Current status

  • Current status: Six regions confirmed; real-world pairings observational but unmistakable.
  • Last verified: July 2, 2026.
  • Official sources checked: Rockstar GTA VI site (region descriptions), trailers, screenshots.
  • What is confirmed: the region names and official descriptions.
  • What is not confirmed yet: Rockstar never names real counterparts — pairings are Analysis built on footage.

The south: Miami, the Keys, and the Everglades

Vice City ← Miami. The anchor pairing — the full evidence has its own page. Expect compressed Miami-Dade: art-deco beachfront, Brickell-style towers, port industry, and neighborhood patchwork.

Leonida Keys ← the Florida Keys. Official footage shows the giveaway: an island chain strung on causeway bridges — the Overseas Highway's fiction. The real Keys predict the gameplay: boat culture, diving, smuggling lore, and a lawless-paradise tone Rockstar's writers won't waste. A Key West-style endpoint town is plausible but unnamed.

Grassrivers ← the Everglades. Airboats appear in Trailer 1's opening minutes. The real Everglades predict: swamp traversal as its own vehicle class, gator encounters (wildlife density is a reported focus), and the national-park vastness that gives the map its wild interior.

The gulf and inland: the Florida tourists don't see

Port Gellhorn ← the Gulf coast. The confirmed port town evokes Panhandle/Gulf industry — shrimping fleets, refineries, spring-break beaches gone shabby. As the second anchor settlement, it's positioned as Vice City's working-class mirror (Analysis).

Ambrosia ← sugar country. The name and inland framing point at the Lake Okeechobee sugar belt — Clewiston, Belle Glade: cane fields, company towns, agricultural crime canvas. Rockstar's rural storytelling (RDR2's heartlands) suggests this is where the story's Bonnie-and-Clyde spine breathes.

Mount Kalaga ← the liberty. Florida has no mountains — Kalaga borrows the South's highlands (north-Florida-into-Appalachia energy) for wilderness gameplay. It's the one place Leonida edits geography rather than compressing it, presumably for terrain variety (Analysis).

Why Florida is the perfect GTA canvas

The setting choice is itself the thesis (Analysis):

  • "Florida Man" is pre-written satire. The state's chaotic news-item energy is GTA's comedic register arriving ready-made — Trailer 1 leaned into it explicitly.
  • Every biome, one state: metropolis, islands, swamp, farmland, coast — the variety that makes the map feel bigger than its estimated 2× GTA 5 footprint.
  • Crime-fiction pedigree: Miami Vice, Scarface, Elmore Leonard — the aesthetic vocabulary GTA 6's marketing already speaks.
  • The modern-day switch (it's not the '80s anymore) swaps cocaine-decade nostalgia for influencer-era satire — a Florida story only 2026 could tell.

The bottom line

Leonida is Florida run through Rockstar's remix engine — every confirmed region has a legible real-world source, from South Beach to sugar country, with one invented mountain range for flavor. Knowing the sources is the best pre-launch map of the game's tone. The map hub covers the in-game version of each region.
