- What is not confirmed yet: exact star thresholds and how long hot zones last.
How the wanted system works
Confirmed by Rockstar in IGN's demo (quotes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North):
- Witnesses matter: "The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law."
- Six stars: the full six-star scale returns. GTA 5 used five.
- Information icons under the stars show what police know:
- a person silhouette: they have your physical description
- a clothes hanger: they know what you're wearing
- a camera: you were caught on CCTV
- Vehicle and couple: police can also know what you're driving and that you're a couple.
- Hollow star: shown when police are responding but don't know who did it.
How to lose the cops
Confirmed tactics shown in the demo (via IGN):
- Change your look. Putting on a hat removed the "description" icon, but not the "clothing" one. Your personal vehicle carries spare outfits in the trunk.
- Ditch the car: police can know what you're driving.
- Split up: police know when they're looking for a couple, so splitting Jason and Lucia up helps.
- Avoid hot zones: wanted status is regional. Areas where you're wanted show up on the map, and a star can linger in that area.
- Don't escalate: aiming without shooting de-escalated a confrontation in the demo.
- Masks return (IGN).
Nelson: "If you commit a crime and run... you're generally going to be fine."
Analysis: stealth and avoiding cameras now pay off. That's a big change from GTA 5's pure line-of-sight escapes.
How it compares
Analysis. The regional hot zones echo Red Dead Redemption 2's bounty system more than GTA 5's simple search circles. GTA 5's Pay 'n' Spray trick for vehicles now extends to your character's look. The new Criminal Profile is a separate system that tracks how you behave over time.

The bottom line
In GTA 6, getting away is about controlling information, not just outrunning cars. See how it fits the couple dynamic in Jason and Lucia's relationship.
