Current status
- Current status: Viral fan video, posted after the October 15 launch trailer.
- Last verified: October 21, 2026.
- Sources checked: Dexerto, Metro.
- What is confirmed: the launch trailer was captured in-game on PS5, per Rockstar.
- What is not confirmed yet: nothing here is official. It's a fan comparison.
What the video is
Reported (Dexerto): GearOS Plays matched the trailer's shots by filming at GTA 5 locations that resemble GTA 6's.
Reported (fan reactions quoted by Dexerto):
- "If you look at 5 and 6, 5 looks like Minecraft compared to 6."
- "I can't look at GTA 5 the same way now after seeing GTA 6."
- "Legitimately looks like a PS2 game now."
Metro said the downgrade is "a real shock" in its headline.
Ned Luke's take
Reported (Dexerto): "This looks nothing like Grand Theft Auto 5. I think they're out of their minds," Luke said in a YouTube video, about people comparing the two. "The technology has grown by leaps and bounds."
Luke has also got Trevor actor Steven Ogg interested in GTA 6. See our Ogg story.
What the comparison can't tell you
Analysis:
- GTA 5 launched in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360. A 13-year gap was always going to look huge.
- Trailers are curated. Rockstar's footage is in-game, but it's chosen to look its best.
- Performance matters as much as looks. GTA 6 targets 30fps on consoles, and frame rate doesn't show in a side-by-side still.
- For a frame-level breakdown, Digital Foundry's analysis is the better guide.
Confirmed vs rumored: the GTA 5 remake
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| A fan remade the launch trailer in GTA 5 | Reported (Dexerto, Metro) |
| The GTA 6 launch trailer is in-game PS5 footage | Confirmed (Rockstar) |
| Ned Luke: "looks nothing like GTA 5" | Reported (his YouTube video, via Dexerto) |
| The video proves final GTA 6 performance | No |
The bottom line
The remake is a great way to see how far Rockstar has come since 2013. Just don't treat it as a benchmark.
