Confirmed (Edge): the comparison covers "total landmass, including Vice City and the surrounding areas" (Edge).
Confirmed (Edge): Edge adds that "acreage is an increasingly blunt measure", and Aaron Garbut says the game has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than past games. See hundreds of interiors.
Why the numbers don't add up neatly
Reported (mapheist): the fan mapping site notes that Kotaku earlier reported Nelson saying Leonida is three times the size of RDR2. Adding up fan measurements of the older maps gives a total "well above the area on the current community map" (mapheist).
Analysis: the likely reasons are that "landmass" excludes open water, older fan measurements vary, and the community map is still incomplete before launch. Treat "nearly combined" as a rough scale, not a precise figure. Our map size guide tracks the community estimates.
What it means for players
Analysis: a bigger map matters most for travel. Rockstar is also adding buses and trains and car delivery through the Scooter Bros app (Edge). Garbut says he's still finding places he'd never seen: "Every back alley is as densely detailed and interesting as the others" (Insider Gaming).
