GTA 6 Has a Much Longer Day-Night Cycle, and Far More Granular Weather

On this page
Current status
- Current status: Confirmed by Rockstar in Edge 430 (Edge).
- Last verified: October 29, 2026.
- What is confirmed: a substantially longer cycle than GTA 5, and granular, system-driven weather.
- What is not confirmed yet: the exact length of an in-game day in real minutes.
Why the day is longer
Confirmed (Edge): Rockstar wanted to avoid "a kind of temporal uncanny valley". At GTA 6's level of detail, GTA 5's speed felt wrong. Nelson: "As the resolution of the worlds goes up, I think there are things you can't get away with in the same way" (Edge).
Confirmed (Edge): it's part of the same rethink that narrowed the roads to "a more believable size".
Analysis: expect longer sunsets and nights. That means more time for night-time crime, but more waiting if you want a specific time of day.
How weather works
Confirmed (Edge, Aaron Garbut): GTA 5's weather had preset states. "This game is much more granular." From the feature (Edge):
- You can see a storm forming in the distance while standing in sunshine.
- Roads get wet, buildings drip afterwards, and surfaces "dry at different rates".
- Wind moves trees, clouds and waves. Islands and buildings shelter water, so boats "skip over that stuff or get really rocked around".
- Planes and helicopters get buffeted and "may even sustain light damage" in severe storms.
- Pedestrians look for shelter.
mapheist has a summary too (mapheist). Earlier storm and hurricane details are in our weather guide.
Gameplay impact
Analysis: weather that damages aircraft and rocks boats is a real gameplay factor, not just visuals. Pilots may want to fly around storms. Rockstar hasn't said whether weather affects police or NPC density beyond people sheltering (Edge).
Confirmed vs rumored: time and weather
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Day-night cycle "extended substantially" | Confirmed (Edge) |
| Exact day length | Not disclosed |
| Clouds driven by wind, humidity, fog, season | Confirmed (Edge) |
| Storms can damage aircraft | Confirmed (light damage, per Edge) |
| Hurricanes | See weather guide |
The bottom line
Analysis: these changes make GTA 6 slower and more simulated. That fits a game Garbut says lets you "have your life in the game" (Insider Gaming).
