GTA 6's Narrower Roads and the 11-Year Map Plan, Explained

On this page
Current status
- Current status: Reported by Schreier from interviews at Rockstar North.
- Last verified: October 21, 2026.
- Sources checked: TechRadar, GamingBolt, PlayStation Universe, the 65-person art figure as reported from Schreier's video.
- What is confirmed: Rob Nelson told IGN the streets are "narrower and more realistic in terms of scale," which with denser traffic makes driving more challenging.
- What is not confirmed yet: exact road widths or traffic numbers.
Narrower roads, denser traffic
Reported (TechRadar):
- Garbut, art director and co-studio head at Rockstar North: "the roads are significantly narrower in GTA 6 than they were in GTA 5."
- The aim was more realism, and less of the wide-lane racing feel of GTA 5.
- Narrower roads meant more surrounding buildings, which Garbut said comes back "to bite you later."
GamingBolt and PlayStation Universe reported the same remarks.
Working on the map since 2015
Reported: Schreier says "a few artists at Rockstar... have actually been working on GTA 6 for more than 11 years since 2015, if not earlier." 2015 is when the team "started going to Miami," because Rockstar plans the map first on its big open-world games (TechRadar).
Reported: most of the studio then moved to Red Dead Redemption 2, while a few artists kept working on GTA 6's map.
Reported (social, from Schreier's video): posts summarising the video say GTA 6 has about 65 people in art production, against roughly five or six on GTA 5. We didn't find that figure in the text of the outlets we checked, so treat it as unverified.
What it means when you play
Analysis:
- Driving gets harder. Tighter streets plus denser traffic means more crashes, which matters for police chases. See the wanted system.
- Cities feel busier. More buildings close to the road is a big part of why the trailers look so dense.
- Bikes and smaller cars may be the smart getaway choice in Vice City. That's our expectation, not a Rockstar statement.

| Denser traffic | Reported |
| Some artists on GTA 6 since 2015 | Reported (Schreier) |

The bottom line
GTA 6's streets are built tighter on purpose, and the map has been in the works for over a decade. Expect slower, messier driving than Los Santos.
