GTA 6 Combat Changes: Disarming, Limb Shots and Slow-Motion Kills

On this page
Current status
- Current status: Combat details come from IGN's interview with Rob Nelson (full text October 7) and preview impressions, based on a July build.
- Last verified: October 22, 2026.
- Sources checked: VICE, GTAVice.net, Insider Gaming, GameSpot (weapon wheel).
- What is confirmed: the weapon wheel stays, per Rockstar via Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.
- What is not confirmed yet: the full weapon list, aim-assist settings and difficulty options.
The new combat mechanics
Reported (VICE's summary of IGN's interview):
- Aiming can be enough. "Drawing a weapon can end a confrontation" because some people run rather than fight.
- Limb shots. "Shooting an enemy's arms or legs can incapacitate them."
- Disarming. "Hitting their weapon can knock it out of their hands."
- Slow motion. "Certain kills can produce effects similar to those seen in Red Dead Redemption 2."
- Passenger shooting. Your partner can drive while you shoot from the passenger seat. Nelson: "The partner can drive pretty well, so you can often have the partner drive to get you away from the cops."
Reported (Insider Gaming): Jason and Lucia reportedly have different fighting styles.
Where your weapons live
Reported, Nelson quote (IGN, via GTAVice.net):
"You can call your personal vehicle at any time. All your weapons that you've purchased will always be available in the back of your personal vehicle."
You can also keep spare outfits in the trunk, useful when the police know what you're wearing.
Reported (GameSpot): Rockstar spent "months if not years" testing a more realistic system with limited carry, then went back to the familiar weapon wheel. See our weapon wheel guide.
Analysis: the vehicle stash recalls RDR2's horse, where unequipped guns waited on the saddle. How many guns you carry on foot hasn't been shown.
The world fights back
Reported: armed civilians can start violence themselves, and some NPCs try to disarm you if they see a crime (VICE, Insider Gaming). See our NPC reactions guide.
Reported (Dexerto, citing Dazed): carrying a rifle in public makes the surrounding world respond.
Analysis: combined with the six-star wanted system, GTA 6 seems to reward quick, quiet crimes over long shootouts. Rockstar calls it a "hit-and-run" approach.

GTA 6 combat sounds more tactical than GTA 5's. Disarming, limb shots and intimidation give you options besides killing. Everything here is from a July demo, so details could still change.
