Current status

  • Current status: Reported by Schreier from interviews at Rockstar North. Rockstar hasn't detailed the final loadout rules.
  • Last verified: October 21, 2026.
  • Sources checked: TechRadar, Game Rant, GamingBolt, Schreier's YouTube video.
  • What is confirmed: GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • What is not confirmed yet: how many weapons you can carry, and how vehicle storage works in practice.

What Schreier said

Reported (TechRadar):

  • Co-studio head Rob Nelson said the team wanted loadouts more like Red Dead Redemption 2 than GTA 5.
  • The concern: "if we use a weapon wheel, is that just going to remind people of all these blank spots in it?"
  • "They tried trays and webs and all sorts of different things in the UI... They tried not having one."
  • "After all that, they just wound up back at a weapon wheel, and in the final game it's just a weapon wheel again."

The source video is Schreier's YouTube upload.

Limited loadouts, the RDR2 way

Reported: TechRadar says the plan involved storage tied to the player's car and a limited set of weapons carried at any time, similar to RDR2's horse-based storage.

Reported (earlier coverage): Engadget noted that in the August Extended Look you can swap between two firearms on the fly without opening a weapon wheel. So the wheel and quick swaps appear to coexist.

Analysis: the wheel stayed, but the limits may not have. Expect fewer guns on you than in GTA 5, with the rest in your car. Treat that as likely, not confirmed.

The 'dark period' context

Reported: Schreier called this part of the "dark periods" of development that "led to some problems for the game." He said things "really started to coalesce" around the end of 2022 or start of 2023, and that Trailer 1 in December 2023 was "a guiding light" for the team (TechRadar).

Game Rant adds that, per Schreier, Rockstar struggled to set a direction between 2019 and 2022. The full development story is in our Bloomberg report guide.
