Current status
- Current status: Control details come from press who watched Rockstar play, not from a published control scheme.
- Last verified: October 23, 2026.
- Sources checked: GTA BOOM (reporting TGG's preview), GTAVice (Kinda Funny preview), goranked.
- What is confirmed: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- What is not confirmed yet: the full button layout, remapping, and Xbox button equivalents.
Aiming and Focus
Reported (GTA BOOM, via TGG):
- Free aim is the default. Some aim stickiness remains and can be tuned in the options, but there's less lock-on than in previous GTA games.
- Enemies aren't marked on the radar or mini-map.
- Focus slows the action and highlights lethal areas in red and incapacitating spots in yellow.
- Guns have more recoil, sound and impact than in GTA V; Nelson fired an assault rifle in short bursts.
- Kill cams can be switched off.
For what happens when those shots land, see disarms and limb shots.
Weapon carry limits
Reported (GTA BOOM, via TGG):
- Each character can conceal two handguns.
- They can carry two long guns, but only one fits on the back. A second has to be held in hand.
- A long gun slung on the back usually passes without incident, but NPCs and police respond to weapons that are out.
- Rifles and shotguns not being carried have to be stored in a vehicle.
- Jason and Lucia can hand guns to each other.
Analysis: this is the biggest change from GTA V's "carry everything" approach and fits Rockstar's push for realism. See our NPC reactions guide.
Movement, cover and melee
Reported (GTA BOOM, via TGG and Kinda Funny):
- Sprint moves from X to L3, freeing your right thumb for the camera while running.
- You can set a default movement pace: normal walk, faster walk, or jog.
- Cover stays on R1. Crouching lets you keep moving and strafing.
- Shoulder switching returns.
- Melee has block and parry, a detail Nelson shared with Kinda Funny (GTAVice).
- Water dives are more controllable.
These are PlayStation button names because the demo was on PS5.

The bottom line
Expect GTA 6 to feel heavier and more deliberate than GTA V. Free aim, recoil and carry limits push you to plan fights, while L3 sprint and pace settings make moving around less tiring. All of this is from previews, so wait for launch for the final layout.
