Current status

  • Current status: Rockstar hasn't announced any ID or face-scan requirement for GTA 6.
  • Last verified: October 16, 2026.
  • Sources checked: Posts on X (linked below), X's trending summary (Oct 10), GTA BOOM on Australia.
  • What is confirmed: The claim is circulating on X; no Rockstar announcement backs it.
  • What is not confirmed: Any GTA 6 ID check by Rockstar, or GTA 6's Australian classification.

The claim on X

Rumor. Examples of the claim as posted:

X's own trending summary on October 10, titled "GTA VI Countdown Hits 40 Days Amid Age Verification Rumors" (X trending), said a viral post claimed players need government ID and facial scans through Rockstar accounts. It added that skeptics noted the source often posts parody and that no official announcement exists. That summary is generated from posts, so treat it as a description of the conversation, not as confirmation.

Separate issue: Australia's PlayStation Store rule (Reported)

Reported (GTA BOOM, updated Oct 6, 2026):

  • Citing PlayStation's support page, GTA BOOM says Australian adult accounts must pass an age check before adding R18+ games from PlayStation Store.
  • You can verify with a government ID scan or a facial age-estimation scan, through a third-party service.
  • GTA BOOM says Microsoft rolled out a similar requirement on Xbox a couple of weeks earlier.
  • It applies at the point of adding the game to your library. It is not a screen inside the game, and GTA BOOM says "None of this is Rockstar Games' doing."

Caveat: this only reaches GTA 6 if Australia rates it R18+. GTA BOOM expects that rating, but we haven't seen an official Australian classification yet.

What players should do

  1. If you're in Australia and buy digitally, check your PlayStation or Xbox account's age-verification status before launch.
  2. Ignore claims that Rockstar will scan your face to start story mode until Rockstar announces it.
  3. Parents: ratings and console family controls still apply. See age rating.
  4. Preorder perks have nothing to do with ID checks. See the GTA+ preorder guide.

Confirmed vs rumored: age checks

The bottom line

Don't mix up store compliance with a Rockstar ID gate. The ID-to-play claim has no Rockstar announcement behind it. The Australian store rule is real, but it's Sony's and Microsoft's, not Rockstar's.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to upload ID to play GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn't announced that. Separately, Australian PlayStation adult accounts must verify their age to add R18+ games from the store, per GTA BOOM.
Is facial scanning required for GTA 6?
Not by Rockstar. Sony's Australian store check offers facial age estimation as an alternative to scanning an ID, and it applies only to R18+ titles.
Is GTA 6 rated R18+ in Australia?
We haven't seen an official Australian classification yet. See our age rating guide.
