Current status

  • Current status: Firmware 14.20 available now. GTA 6 launches November 19.
  • Last verified: October 21, 2026.
  • Sources checked: IGN, Engadget, GamesRadar+.
  • What is confirmed: the update's version number, size and official patch note.
  • What is not confirmed yet: which firmware GTA 6 will require at launch, and whether 14.20 changes security.

What's in the update

Confirmed (Sony, via IGN):

  • Version 26.07-14.20.00, about 1.2 GB.
  • Patch note: "We've improved the messages and usability on some screens."

Reported (IGN): Sony's notes don't mention security, but some in the community believe it does more under the hood. IGN adds that Sony "may even release a further security update" before November 19.

Why people are talking about jailbreaks

Reported:

  • A jailbreak for firmware 7.00 to 13.60 was released late last month (IGN).
  • Firmware 14.10 closed that gap, and a developer has since shown kernel-level access on 14.10 in a video but hasn't released a method (Engadget).
  • Engadget explains a kernel exploit alone isn't enough to run cracked games. A hypervisor exploit would also be needed, and none has appeared.
  • GamesRadar+ frames it as Sony and Rockstar's worst-case scenario.

Our policy: we report on this as news. We don't link exploits, dumps or builds. For the PC side of these claims, see our AnyPS5 and PC claims guide.

What you should do

Analysis:

  1. Install 14.20 (or whatever is current) now, so you're not updating on launch night.
  2. Turn on automatic updates in your PS5's settings so a last-minute firmware drop doesn't block your preload.
  3. Keep storage free. The firmware is small, but GTA 6's install size isn't published yet. See our storage prep guide.
  4. Ignore "play GTA 6 early" offers. They're scams. See our early download scams guide.
