What Sony reportedly said
Reported (Playfront exclusive via Engadget): Sony told distributors that "temporary market supply constraints and high demand" will limit PS5 Pro stock until next year. Engadget's later piece says the memo describes shortages lasting "through early 2027 at the earliest."
Reported context (Engadget): memory prices are rising sharply. JP Morgan predicts DRAM prices could rise 400%, which adds pressure on console supply. Japan is using lotteries for Pro sales.
Current prices
Reported (Engadget, October 10–11):
| Listing | Price |
|---|---|
| PS5 Pro list price (U.S.) | $899.99 ($200 above its launch price) |
| GameStop, used/pre-owned PS5 Pro | $1,399.99 |
| Best Buy marketplace reseller | Over $1,500 (one listing $1,539) |
| Walmart open-box | About $1,200 |
The base PS5 has also gone up $150 since launch, per Engadget. Prices change fast, so check the retailer. Base console pricing: GTA 6 PS5 price.
Do you need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
Analysis:
- No: GTA 6 runs on base PS5, with 30fps reported for both base PS5 and Series X (our 30fps explainer).
- What Pro adds: the game is PS5 Pro Enhanced. Engadget notes Sony's PSSR upscaling works only on Pro Enhanced games like GTA 6. Digital Foundry expects better image quality, not 60fps.
- Base PS5 upscaling: Sony's October blog says a new upscaler is coming to base PS5 (via Engadget). Its effect on GTA 6 is unknown.
- Don't overpay: paying $500+ over list for a reseller unit is hard to justify for a game that runs well on base hardware. Bundles: GTA 6 bundles.
