The latest numbers

Reported (TechPowerUp, Sensor Tower estimates):

MeasureOct 13Latest
Digital pre-orders worldwide6.08 million6.45 million
Revenue (net of returns)$594 million~$630 million
PlayStation~4.80M copies, $468M (74%)
Xbox~1.66M copies, $162M

That's about 370,000 more pre-orders in roughly a week. TechPowerUp notes Sensor Tower changed its estimation model on October 5, so older figures aren't a perfect comparison.

148% ahead of Modern Warfare 2

Reported (GameSpot, citing GamesIndustry.biz): Sensor Tower compared GTA 6 with big launches from the past six years, including Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy and Marvel's Spider-Man. MW2 was the strongest of those, and GTA 6 is pacing 148% ahead of it over a comparable period. That's US digital only.

Reported (GameSpot): Sensor Tower expects most pre-orders to come in the final week, and said total pre-purchases could reach 25 million.

Editions and platforms

Reported: TechPowerUp says Sensor Tower finds "the vast majority" went for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in August that pre-orders were skewing toward the premium edition.

Reported (GameSpot): Xbox says it's very happy with its GTA 6 pre-order numbers.

Analysis: GameSpot points out the PS5 has sold much better than Xbox Series X|S, so the split isn't a surprise. Compare editions in our Standard vs Ultimate guide.
