Your three options
| Option | PS5 | Xbox Series X|S | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store gift card | Yes | Yes | Must match the recipient's region |
| Direct digital gift | No | Not for the pre-order (Reported) | Same country only |
| Boxed copy (download code) | Yes | Yes | PlayStation codes are region-locked |
Reported (sixthstar, citing Sony and Microsoft support): these are standard store rules, not a GTA 6 policy. Rockstar has no gifting article.

PlayStation gifting
Confirmed (Sony): PlayStation Store gift cards can be used on PS5, PS5 Pro and PS4, and Sony lists digital pre-orders as something they can pay for.
Reported (sixthstar, quoting Sony support): "The voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account." Funds and content can't be moved between accounts.
Analysis: buy a card that covers the full price in the recipient's country. GTA 6 is $79.99 in the US. See GTA 6 price.
Xbox gifting
Confirmed (Xbox Wire): the Microsoft Store has a "Buy as gift" option for eligible digital games (Xbox Wire).
Reported (sixthstar): the GTA 6 pre-order page had no gift option on October 8. Xbox's 2017 gifting launch excluded pre-orders.
Reported (sixthstar, citing Microsoft's terms): givers and recipients must be in the same country. You can cancel a gift within 14 days or until it's redeemed, and you may have to wait up to 30 days if you hit the gift limit.
Confirmed vs rumored: gifting GTA 6
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Sony recommends gift cards for gifting | Confirmed (PlayStation) |
| Xbox GTA 6 pre-order can't be gifted | Reported (sixthstar, checked Oct 8) |
| Boxed copy contains a code, not a disc | Reported (sixthstar citing Rockstar Support) |
| PlayStation codes are region-locked; Xbox codes aren't | Reported (sixthstar citing Rockstar Support) |
| Xbox gifting opens after launch | Unconfirmed |
The bottom line
Analysis: a gift card in the recipient's region is the safest choice on either console. They'll make the purchase themselves, so any pre-order bonus counts as theirs. Watch out for cheap key sellers; see GTA 6 key resellers.
