- Last verified: October 15, 2026.
- Sources checked: IGN exclusive preview; Engadget on the Extended Look.
- What is confirmed: gated parked cars, key cloners, GPS trackers, the scanning app, and carjacking any driver.
- What is not confirmed yet: which tools unlock when, and how selling or registering cars works in detail.
What's changed from GTA 5
Confirmed (Nelson via IGN): there are "certain parked cars that are not accessible to you until you get a bit further along with the story and you acquire certain tools... but you can always carjack any driver you see."
| Situation | What happens | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Occupied car | You can always carjack the driver | Confirmed |
| Some parked cars early on | Locked until you get story tools | Confirmed |
| High-end car with electronic lock | May need a key cloner | Confirmed (IGN) |
| Car with GPS tracker | You must drive fast to avoid being caught | Confirmed (IGN) |
| Basic lock | "Slim Jim" timed minigame (Extended Look, 06:07) | Reported (Engadget) |
The car-scanner phone app
Confirmed (IGN): Jason and Lucia have a phone scanning app that shows whether a car has a tracker, what it's worth to resell, and what it costs to register.
Analysis: that implies a used-car economy with resale and registration, beyond GTA 5's Los Santos Customs sell-off. Rockstar hasn't detailed prices or limits.
Driving and getaways are harder
Confirmed (Nelson via IGN): the streets are "narrower and more realistic," which "makes driving slightly more challenging."
Tips from the demo (Reported): police can know what you're driving, so switching vehicles helps. Scooters showed up as an escape option. Your personal vehicle can carry spare outfits. Full escape guide: IGN on the wanted system.
