Current status
- Current status: Origin story reported by Schreier. GTA 6 using an evolved version is stated by Rob Nelson.
- Last verified: October 21, 2026.
- Sources checked: GamesRadar+, Insider Gaming, Schreier's YouTube video.
- What is confirmed: Nelson's IGN quotes about the system returning and evolving.
- What is not confirmed yet: the full list of interaction options in GTA 6.
The prototype story
Reported (GamesRadar+, from Schreier's video):
- Mark Tennant prototyped the idea around 2014 to 2015.
- The button that normally aims a gun could instead let you greet or antagonize someone.
- Phil Hooker was wary of showing Nelson, because of the extra work Nelson would want to build around it.
- Nelson saw it anyway: "This is incredible... This will revolutionize the way our games and our worlds work."
GamesRadar+ notes Hooker turned out to be right that it was a lot of work. Insider Gaming also reported the 2014 prototype date.
What Nelson says GTA 6 adds
Confirmed (Rob Nelson to IGN, quoted by GamesRadar+):
- "The NPC interaction system is one that is returning and evolved from Red Dead Redemption 2."
- "Traditionally, L2 was a binary action that immediately aimed your gun at someone or locked onto them for combat."
- "While we pushed this sort of interaction with NPCs as far as we could for Red Dead Redemption 2, with GTA 6 we are taking it much further."
Reported (GamesRadar+): groups of NPCs gather and chat, and how they react to you listening in depends on who they are.
'No one person has the whole thing in their head'
Reported: GamesRadar+ also covered Schreier's point that even Rockstar's leads don't know everything in GTA 6, because developers are given room to add details, the same way RDR2 got its famous horse physics.
Analysis: that culture explains how a side prototype became a core system across two games. It also suggests GTA 6 will have plenty of small, unplanned details for players to find. Related: Rockstar's leads say the game is never completely settled.
