Current status

  • Current status: Mod Guidelines live on Rockstar's site since September 10, 2026; Creator Platform license updated the same day.
  • Last verified: October 23, 2026.
  • Sources checked: Rockstar Games, The Verge, Inven Global, IGN Middle East, Cfx.re license, Rockstar Support.
  • What is confirmed: the guidelines apply across Rockstar titles. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
  • What is not confirmed yet: a GTA 6 PC release date, and whether GTA 6 will ever be on the FiveM-style Creator Platform.

What the guidelines ban

Confirmed (Rockstar Mod Guidelines, as reported by The Verge and Inven Global):

  • Mods that expand or modify official storylines, missions or characters.
  • Crossover mods that bring assets from one Rockstar game into another (for example, RDR2 content in GTA V).
  • Unofficial ports of Rockstar games or their content.
  • Cheat menus or other software that interferes with Rockstar's multiplayer, online services or the Creator Platform.

Reported (Inven Global, IGN Middle East): outside the licensed Creator Platform, mods must be non-commercial.

What it means for GTA 6 roleplay servers

Confirmed (history): Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, in August 2023.

Reported (IGN Middle East, The Verge): multiplayer and roleplay mods are limited to the Creator Platform, under the Cfx license updated on September 10 (Cfx.re license PDF). IGN Middle East framed this as ending hopes for independently monetized GTA 6 RP servers.

Analysis: that only matters once GTA 6 is on PC and supported by the platform. Neither has been announced.

What's still allowed

Confirmed (Rockstar Support): Rockstar keeps a support article on PC single-player mods for its existing games (Rockstar Support). The new guidelines restrict certain kinds of mods rather than banning single-player modding outright.

Analysis: cosmetic, graphics and quality-of-life mods for single-player look safest. Anything that adds story content, ports content between games, or touches online play is now clearly out of bounds.

The bottom line

Rockstar has set the modding rules before GTA 6 even reaches PC. Expect single-player tinkering to be tolerated, story mods and ports to be taken down, and paid roleplay to go through FiveM. For the PC timeline, see our PC release date guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mod GTA 6?
GTA 6 is console-only at launch, so there's no practical modding yet. Rockstar's Mod Guidelines will apply once it reaches PC.
Does Rockstar ban story mods?
Yes. The September 10, 2026 guidelines ban mods that expand or modify official storylines, missions or characters.
Will there be GTA 6 RP servers?
Not announced. Rockstar's rules route multiplayer mods through its Creator Platform (FiveM/RedM), and GTA 6 support there hasn't been confirmed.
Can modders sell GTA mods?
Only through Rockstar's licensed Creator Platform, per reports on the guidelines. Other mods must be non-commercial.

Keep exploring GTA 6
