Will GTA 6 Cost the US $1 Billion in Lost Work? The Claim, Checked

On this page
Current status
- Current status: Viral claim with no published methodology.
- Last verified: October 21, 2026.
- Sources checked: MarketSpeaker, IBTimes UK, a viral X thread that re-ran the numbers.
- What is confirmed: GTA 6 launches Thursday, November 19, 2026.
- What is not confirmed yet: any survey of how many US workers will actually miss work.
Where the $1 billion figure came from
Reported (MarketSpeaker):
- Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER reported the $1 billion figure in July 2025, with comments from Pompeu Fabra University economist José García Montalvo about gaming and working hours.
- That report didn't present a launch-day calculation, a workforce survey or the 1.5 million figure.
- It also predates the current release date.
IBTimes UK has covered the claim as a possible productivity slump among young men and remote tech workers.
Running the viral numbers
Analysis (our arithmetic). A viral X thread ran the claim's own inputs: 1.5 million workers at about $70,000 of output a year.
| Step | Figure |
|---|---|
| Output per worker per year | ~$70,000 |
| Working days per year (assumed) | ~260 |
| Output per worker per day | ~$270 |
| Times 1.5 million workers | ~$400 million |
So the inputs don't produce $1 billion. And the inputs themselves aren't sourced.
Why a day off isn't the same as lost output
Reported (MarketSpeaker's argument):
- Approved leave, an unplanned absence and slacking at your desk are different things.
- Someone who books a holiday may finish work beforehand or catch up later.
- Multiplying a headcount by a wage doesn't measure a permanent hit to GDP.
Reported: a 2017 paper by Aguiar, Bils, Charles and Hurst linked better games to fewer hours worked by young men over years, not to one release day (MarketSpeaker).
Confirmed vs rumored: GTA 6 and lost work
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| GTA 6 will cost the US $1 billion in a day | Unverified (no published method) |
| 1.5 million workers will skip work | Unverified (no survey found) |
| Origin is a July 2025 Cadena SER report | Reported (MarketSpeaker) |
| Viral inputs give about $400 million | Analysis (arithmetic) |
| Some employers are giving time off | Reported, see our time off guide |
The bottom line
The $1 billion number is a headline, not a study. Lots of people will take November 19 off. Nobody has measured how many, or what it costs.

- MarketSpeaker: GTA VI's $1 billion lost-productivity claim lacks evidence

Update log: 2026-10-21: Published. Per-day output assumes about 260 working days a year.
Frequently asked questions
- Will GTA 6 cost the economy $1 billion?
- There's no published calculation behind that figure. It traces to a 2025 Spanish radio report that didn't include a launch-day estimate.
- How many people will skip work for GTA 6?
- Nobody knows. The viral 1.5 million figure doesn't come from an identifiable survey.
- Does the $1 billion math add up?
- Using the claim's own inputs of 1.5 million workers at about $70,000 a year, one day comes to roughly $400 million, not $1 billion.
